Shirley Hirsch wants what every Jewish mother wants: her son, Nelson, to settle down with a nice, Jewish girl. Over and over, Shirley (My Big Fat Greek Wedding's Lainie Kazan) invites a new potential wife to Shabbat dinner. Tired of uncomfortable meals, Nelson informs his mother and his father, Martin, that the matchmaking can stop, as he's already seeing someone seriously. Thrilled but suspicious, Shirley drops by Nelson's home, only to meet the sex kitten next door, Sybil (Carmen Electra), and Angelo (Queer Eye's Jai Rodriguez), Nelson's actual boyfriend who poses as his "decorator." Naturally making the assumption that shiksa goddess Sybil is her son's mate, she eagerly tells the family that Nelson will be bringing a date to an upcoming wedding. When he shows up with his rainbow yarmulke-wearing boyfriend instead, one of the most hilariously awkward coming out scenes in history happens.
Shirley and Martin try every method possible to deal with the news that their beloved son is a faygelah: they go to a psychiatrist, Martin confronts his homophobia at the local gay bar, they even beg Sybil to sleep with Nelson--all with uproarious results.
With an all-star cast that includes Bruce Vilanch and Vincent Pastore from The Sopranos, Oy Vey! explores the boundaries of unconditional family love.
Following the film at the Mindy Solomon Gallery for a "Meet the Director" Reception and continued discussion.
