SUMMARY:Vision Portraits
DESCRIPTION:5 O’CLOCK DOC\nRodney Evans\, 2019\, USA\, 79 min. \nClose your eyes. Picture a sunset\, an open book\, a glass of water\, the forest. Is there anything you didn’t see? Queer filmmaker Rodney Evans (Brother To Brother\, The Happy Sad) becomes the almost unwilling subject of his own film\, as he chronicles his loss of vision. Evans talks with fellow artists – a photographer\, a dancer\, and a writer – who have gone through similar experiences and who have thrived despite their visual impairments. Sharing and hearing their stories helps Evans understand the journey he is on\, resolving that vision doesn’t just come through the eyes\, but through the heart.

SUMMARY:Straight Up
DESCRIPTION:NARRATIVE CENTERPIECE\nJames Sweeney\, 2019\, USA\, 95 min \nIn an auspicious directorial debut\, James Sweeney brings us this highly entertaining romantic comedy with a twist: a love story without the thrill of copulation. Hyper-articulate\, obsessive compulsive gay twenty-something Todd (Sweeney) wants to try being straight. Not because he thinks being gay is bad. He just thinks he is bad at being gay. He is lonely and confused\, afraid of dying alone\, and his therapist – the delightful Tracie Thomas (Rent\, The Devil Wears Prada) – won’t tell him what to do. Enter Rory (perfectly played by Katie Findlay of “How to Get Away With Murder”)\, a whip-smart aspiring actress who hates meeting people\, enjoys the same types of films\, and finds irony in the same situations They connect immediately\, forging a relationship that’s all talk and no sex. But\, can two people be soul mates in a “real” relationship without sex\, especially if one of them is gay? With razor sharp dialogue delivered at light-speed\, Sweeney hits it out of the park with this engaging film that’s equal parts Classical Hollywood and distinctly 21st century\, exploring just how elastic our definitions of love and sexuality can get. \nDirector/actor James Sweeney is scheduled to attend. \nSPONSORED BY TAMPA THEATRE

SUMMARY:Seahorse
DESCRIPTION:5 O’CLOCK DOC – DOCUMENTARY CENTERPIECE\nJeanie Finlay\, 2019\, UK\, 89 min \nAfter wheeling around each other in a courtship dance\, female seahorses unload their eggs into male seahorse’s bellies. The males carry the eggs for weeks\, until fully formed baby seahorses emerge. This gender bending reproductive cycle mirrors that of the subject of this thoughtful documentary: a transgender man named Freddy who undertakes to start a family by becoming pregnant. Though Freddy yearns to raise his own child\, pregnancy challenges his understanding of masculinity\, gender\, and parenthood more than he could have ever imagined. \nThis highly personal and intimate film tackles universal themes. Its account of a pregnancy will be familiar to anyone who has navigated the path to parenthood\, but this timeless journey is made entirely fresh by seeing it through the perspective of a transgender man. The film does not shy away from depicting the most challenging\, emotional moments of Freddy’s journey\, but ultimately is an uplifting story of the birth of a much-wanted baby. It is a celebration of perseverance\, bravery\, and of the life experiences that unite us. At the heart of the film is classic observational footage\, shot both by cinematographers and the director\, over a three-year shoot period. And the result\, having premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival\, is a universal story\, visually appealing and gripping from start to finish.

SUMMARY:Changing The Game
DESCRIPTION:5 O’CLOCK DOC–\nMichael Barnett\, 2019\, USA\, 88 min \nFor young transgender athletes\, the sport they love often turns into a minefield of controversy. Decried as cheaters if they excel or barred from competing among the gender they identify with; positive outcomes are rare. But when a sport is a lifeline\, what is fair? This exceptional film mines that question through intimate portraits of three trans athletes who offer us the opportunity to see the world through their eyes — and share their struggles and successes along the way.

SUMMARY:Song Lang
DESCRIPTION:INTERNATIONAL CENTERPIECE\nLeon Le\, 2018\, Vietnam\, 102 min \nWhen a hunky\, brooding\, and hardened debt collector and martial arts practitioner Dung “Thunderbolt” threatens to set fire to a pile of traditional opera costumes for an upcoming performance\, one of the actors\, Linh Phung\, steps in to argue for more time. This non-traditional meeting instead ignites a slow burn between the two men\, set against a lush and gritty 1980s Vietnam and shot on beautiful 35mm film. As the two grow closer\, their relationship begins to pitch towards the romantic extremes of the opera. \nA song lang is a percussion instrument used to control tempo and phrasing in Vietnamese modern folk opera. In the Vietnamese language\, it also means “two men.” It is the perfect homonym for a nearly perfect film. \nHaving earned dozens of awards from festivals around the world\, this visually stunning film is a favorite for critics and audiences alike\, sweeping narrative feature\, screenplay\, cinematography\, production design and costume design prizes\, among others – including the Audience Award at the Frameline LGBT Film Festival in San Francisco. It is an outstanding achievement for first-time feature director Leon Le—who also voices the part of the lead actor in the opera! \nIn Vietnamese with English subtitles. \nSPONSORED BY ST. DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Reeder\, 2019\, USA\, 111 min \nCarolyn\, Joanna\, Laurel\, and Charlotte are your average teenage girls in rural Ohio: they front afro punk bands\, make out with fellow cheerleaders in the woods\, and deal with unstable parents. But when Carolyn disappears one night\, the town must come together to investigate this unimaginable trauma. DESCRIPTION:International Coming Out Day!\n5 O’CLOCK DOC\nJeffrey McHale\, 2019\, USA\, 91 min \nWhen does a critically “bad” film become a cult film? Is “camp” manufactured or does it just happen?  Jeffrey McHale’s documentary asks these questions\, but in the subtlest of ways. McHale digs deep in his detailed exploration of the nuances and the blatant exploitation of Showgirls\, the 1995 worst everything in cinema. McHale’s exploration isn’t just an intellectual analysis. It is a portrait\, lovingly painted\, of a film that doesn’t just push the envelope – it rips it up\, steps on it\, and sets it on fire. \n\n\nDress Up Like Mrs. Doubtfire\nWill Zang\, 2019\, USA\, 13 min \nA look at 1992’s Mrs. Doubtfire as one of first family-friendly films to include drag.

SUMMARY:Suzanne Westenhoefer in Tampa
DESCRIPTION:Suzanne never does the same show twice. She can’t. She doesn’t write anything down. She charges boldly onto the stage and what happens is always a mystery and a delight. So if you have seen her before\, never fear\, she has new and fun stories and observations every day! \nNo one ever accused Suzanne of being subtle\, not the shuttle driver who took her to the airport\, the woman she was in line with at the grocery store yesterday and certainly not her audiences.  Subtle\, she is not. \nAfter 25 years of groundbreaking\, stereotype-shattering and brutally honest comedy\, she’s not about to start pulling punches now. \nThe kid from Amish Country who began her comedy career on a dare is celebrating a quarter century of out\, open\, no-holds-barred comedy. \nSuzanne tells the truth. The truth is life is funny\, especially when it’s fermented in Suzanne’s mind. That’s why she could never be in the closet\, making her a trailblazer when she started doing stand-up in the 1990s. She was the first openly lesbian comedian with an HBO Special and the first openly lesbian comedian on “Late Night with David Letterman.” \nHeck\, she was on Sally Jesse Raphael in 1991 on a show called “Breaking the Lesbian Stereotype…Lesbians Who Don’t Look Like Lesbians.” \nFrom “OMG\, a lesbian has long hair and wears make up” to “I went to Helen and Jane’s wedding last weekend\,” that’s how far we’ve come in the 25 years Suzanne has been telling her truth to audiences all over the world. \nBe prepared for 90 minutes of laughter and fun! \nThis is a special ticket NOT included with Crown Circle or 4 packs \nIncluded with Simply Fabulous Pass \n

SUMMARY:Gay Chorus Deep South - {Closing Night}
DESCRIPTION:Closing Night Program\nDavid Charles Rodrigues\, 2019\, USA\, 98 min \nThe San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus set out to bring their message of hope and resiliency in response to the 2016 presidential election by spending a week touring throughout the deep south. \nThe Chorus\, joined by The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir\, brought a message of music\, love\, and acceptance to communities and individuals confronting intolerance. Over 300 singers travelled from Mississippi to Tennessee\, through the Carolinas\, and over the bridge in Selma. They performed in churches\, community centers and concert halls in hopes of uniting us in a time of difference. The journey also challenged Director Tim Seeleg and other Chorus members who fled the South to confront their own fears\, pain\, and prejudices\, on a journey towards reconciliation. The conversations and connections that emerge offer a glimpse of a less divided America\, where the things that divide us – faith\, politics\, sexual identity – are set aside by the soaring power of music\, humanity\, and a little drag. \nThere is beautiful vocal performance in this movie. But there is much more than singing to this thoughtful documentary that chronicles a journey that began as a challenge to the oppression of the deep south and ended in the delight of southern people steeped in their love of gospel music and hungry for conversation. This remarkable film demonstrates that\, clearly\, there is a whole lot of fixing that singing can do. \nSFGMC Director Tim Seelig is scheduled to Skype with the audience following the film. \n\nWomen Make Music – 25 Years of Crescendo: The Tampa Bay Women’s Chorus\nSunny Hall\, 2019\, USA\, 8 min \n\nPreceded by a performance by the Tampa Bay Gay Men’s Chorus. \nJoin us at Bizou Brasserie at Le Méridien (601 N. Florida) after the closing film to celebrate another festival bringing fierce\, fabulous\, LGBTQ+ film in Tampa Bay. Food and drinks for purchase. \nSPONSORED BY TAMPA BAY GAY MEN’S CHORUS

SUMMARY:PORT AUTHORITY
DESCRIPTION:OPENING NIGHT FILM\nDanielle Lessovitz\, 2019\, USA 94 min \nTIGLFF is proud to open this year’s festival with a film that celebrates diversity and authenticity. And just like the Manhattan bus terminal which greets travelers arriving in a city full of excitement and discovery\, Port Authority welcomes you to this year’s festival. \nThe NYC Port Authority is a mecca dedicated to getting people where they need to go but when Paul\, a young Midwestern probation dodger with a damaged past and a chip on his shoulder\, first arrives here – he’s got nowhere to go. His desperate search for a sense of belonging finds him reluctantly working for crooked movers who prey on the poor. But he is also secretly in love with Wye\, a young trans woman whose tight-knit band of kiki ballroom performers exude the love\, excitement\, and stability he craves. Caught in the rivalry between his homophobic co-workers and her inclusive\, protective trans community\, Paul and Wye seek refuge in their forbidden love\, aptly staged on a fire escape “balcony” and reminiscent of the warring factions in Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story. Portraying the star-crossed lovers are the boyishly handsome Fionn Whitehead (lead actor from Dunkirk) and the strikingly beautiful Leyna Bloom\, the first trans actress to star in a competition film at the Cannes Film Festival. Showcasing Manhattan from a streetwise viewpoint\, writer/director Danielle Lessovitz has crafted a gritty yet graceful film with the help of executive producer Martin Scorsese. \nAVAILABLE: OCT. 2 – 3
