Alex Mitow

A Tampa Bay Area native, Alex Mitow (he/him) brings two decades of art, film, hospitality, and events experience to the TIGLFF board. A lifelong movie buff, Alex graduated from University of Miami in 2010 with a degree in marketing. He co-founded the Superfine Art Fair in 2015 with then-partner James Miille. The annual Miami event soon expanded to become the largest independent art fair for visual artists in the US, hosting editions in New York City, Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and Savannah, GA and exhibiting the work of more than 2,500 artists over the last decade. Superfine emphasizes a direct artist-to-audience connection as well as diversity and a focus on the artist themselves – ethos that Alex has translated into his film ventures and non-profit board positions.

On the heels of Superfine, Alex founded Sherpa Films in 2019. Designed as a much-needed link between underrepresented filmmakers and their audience, Sherpa represents a vehicle for those filmmakers to meet their financial and audience goals while simultaneously engaging new audiences with fresh, largely queer content. Both through Sherpa and individually, Alex has produced more than a dozen well-received short and feature films including Tyler Rabinowitz’ See You Soon (BFI Flare ’20) + Catalina (Outfest LA ’22), Angal Field’s BUST (Sundance ’24), Jason Eldredge’s MASC (Hollywood Reel Int’l Film Festival, ’24), Tij D’Oyen’s Nepotism, Baby! (TriBeca ’24), Neal Mulani’s RAT! (festival premiere TBA), and the forthcoming Peter Hujar’s Day by director Ira Sachs, starring Ben Whishaw and Rebecca Hall.

Sherpa also handled festival + alternative cinematic distribution for noted LGBTQ+ photographer Rob Woodcox’s first film effort Honey To The Moon (Provincetown and TIGLFF ’23) and is working on several feature film distribution projects with both emerging and well-recognized queer directors.

Alex splits his time between homes in Mexico City, Shelter Island, NY, and Brooklyn, NY when not traveling or spending time with family in the Tampa area. In addition to TIGLFF, he is on the advisory board of the North Fork Arts Center in Greenport, NY, and is a founding board member of the Venice Beach Film Festival in Venice Beach, Los Angeles, CA.
